چکیده

We investigate the processes that influence residence time in a partially mixed estuary using a threedimensional circulation model. The complex geometry of the study region is not optimal for a structured grid model and so we developed a new method of grid connectivity. This involves a novel approach that allows an unlimited number of individual grids to be combined in an efficient manner to produce a composite grid. We then implemented this new method into the numerical Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and developed a composite grid of the Hudson River estuary region to investigate the residence time of a passive tracer. Results show that the residence time is a strong function of the time of release (spring vs. neap tide), the along-channel location, and the initial vertical placement. During neap tides there is a maximum in residence time near the bottom of the estuary at the mid-salt intrusion length. During spring tides the residence time is primarily a function of alongchannel location and does not exhibit a strong vertical variability. This model study of residence time illustrates the utility of the grid connectivity method for circulation and dispersion studies in regions of complex geometry. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A BOUNDARY-FITTED SHALLOW WATER MODEL OF SIMULATE TIDE AND SURGE FOR THE HEAD BAY OF BENGAL – APPLICATION TO CYCLONE SIDR (2007) AND AILA (2009)

Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...

Enlarging Domain of Attraction for a Special Class of Continuous-time Quadratic Lyapunov Function Piecewise Affine Systems based on Discontinuous Piecewise

This paper presents a new approach to estimate and to enlarge the domain of attraction for a planar continuous-time piecewise affine system. Various continuous Lyapunov functions have been proposed to estimate and to enlarge the system’s domain of attraction. In the proposed method with a new vision and with the aids of a discontinuous piecewise quadratic Lyapunov function, the domain of attrac...

Assessing Water Exchange Mechanisms in Complex Lake and Coastal Flows by Modelling the Spatial Distribution of Mean Residence Time

Water exchange mechanisms are assessed via modelling the spatial distribution of the mean residence time in lakes and coastal areas. A grid-based numerical solution of the deterministic advection-diffusion-reaction kinetics equation with the ageing of water as transport variable is applied. The composition of residence time from times spent over separate sub-domains is handled as multi-species ...

Enhancement of Voltage/Frequency Stability in an Autonomous Micro Energy Grid with Penetration of Wind Energy Using a Parallel Fuzzy Mechanism

The main objective of this paper is to model and optimize the parallel and relatively complex FuzzyP+FuzzyI+FuzzyD (FP+FI+FD) controller for simultaneous control of the voltage and frequency of a micro-grid in the islanded mode. The FP+FI+FD controller has three parallel branches, each of which has a specific task. Finally, as its name suggests, the final output of the controller is derived fro...

Calculation of the reflected waves against obstacles is a prominent step in designing coastal structures. In addition, a complex process occurs during wave collision with beaches or breakwaters. These processes cause wave characteristics to be (energy dissipation, reflected wave, etc.). The new wave characteristics are dependent on reflected wave height straightly which are not measureable. In ...
